In 2018, Signal Hill was able to reach students through our programs, presentations, and our Value Project Summit. Here are a few of the many stories of transformation. (And don't forget to scroll down to learn about our significant matching grant!!)
This fall, Marco participated in Signal Hill's Value Project Summit. When he arrived we could see that the weight of the world was on his shoulders. As the Summit progressed, we saw a young man emerge who was inspiring, confident, attentive to the needs of others, and willing to be vulnerable. We know that the change he experienced was an encouragement to many other students - one student spoke to hundreds of her peers at their Value Week school assembly about how Marco inspired her at the Summit.
Our educational approach has changed lives and strengthened students, their communities, and their families. As a young teenager, Alice* (name changed for privacy) listened to one of our presentations. Years later, when she faced an unexpected pregnancy, the lessons she learned in that presentation directly contributed to her choice to raise her child with the help of her mother and father, who were also at that presentation. Alice recently gave birth to a little girl.
Francis* came to our Value Project Summit feeling lonely and discouraged, "like a shadow, not really leaving a mark". At the end of the Summit, he was able to write about a renewed sense of hope and compassion, saying "In the end, it's almost like there is a little bit of you in everybody, and how could you mistreat yourself?" Francis has moved from discouragement to affirmation because of his experience at the Value Project Summit.
Many of these stories show that young people have a renewed sense of the dignity and value of others. Alex* writes, "The way I view empathy and sympathy has evolved in an unfathomable amount. This led me to think how I can help others more in a more respectful manner so that they move towards wholeness." Imagine being in a school where every student had that perspective. What an amazing place that would be.
Over the course of the Value Project Summit, Molly experienced a sense of healing and wholeness that continues to shine out to the people around her. Because of the Summit, Molly learned how to see the needs of others and love them well. Molly and her team brought what they learned about compassionate leadership back to their school during their Value Week presentation. They recruited teachers to give verbal affirmations to four randomly chosen students and then, in turn, surprised those teachers by affirming them in front of the school. Molly is leading by example, showing hundreds of her classmates how to value others.
These are only a few of Signal Hill's many Stories of Hope. Will you help us achieve our goal of raising $50,000 this Christmas so that our theme can become the reality of even more young people, stories of hope? We’ve looked over the numbers and found that we can hit this goal if we receive the following:
- 1 gift of $10,000
- 3 gifts of $5,000
- 5 gifts of $2,000
- 10 gifts of $1,000
- 25 gifts of $200
Will you consider making a generous contribution to Signal Hill this Christmas? We have received a MATCHING GRANT of $25,000, which means that any donation you make is automatically doubled in effectiveness!
We are passionate about continuing our life-affirming work, all of which is made possible because of donors like you. Thank you for your gift of hope. We wish you and your family a merry Christmas and a joy-filled New Year.
